About Sales Tax Calculator

A sales tax calculator answers the annoying question of what a purchase really costs once tax is added. Tax rates differ by state, county, and city, and figuring out how much of a rounded receipt total is actually tax is harder than it looks, especially for larger purchases.

Going forward, total = price × (1 + rate). For 8% tax on $50 that is $54. Going backward, pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate), which recovers $50 from $54. The classic mistake is subtracting the tax rate from the total directly, which gives the wrong answer because 8% of $54 is not 8% of $50.

Consumers use it to budget for big purchases, freelancers and contractors add sales tax to their invoices, and small businesses verify they collect the right amount at the till. It works equally well for VAT, which follows the same math, in countries that use value-added tax instead.

How to Use

  1. Enter the pre-tax price.
  2. Enter the tax rate as a percentage.
  3. Read the total and the tax amount.

Example

$50.00 at 8% tax Total: $54.00 · Tax: $4.00

8% of $50 is $4 in tax, added to the price for a $54 total.

FAQ

What is the difference between add tax and remove tax?

Add tax computes the total including tax. Remove tax works backward from a tax-inclusive price to find the pre-tax amount.

Can I calculate VAT the same way?

Yes, VAT and sales tax use the same math, so this works for both.

Why does the backward calculation differ from the forward one?

Dividing a tax-inclusive price by 1.08 gives the pre-tax amount; subtracting 8% from the total would be incorrect math.

Why do some states charge different tax rates?

Sales tax combines state, county, and city rates, so nearby towns often differ. Many states also exempt certain goods like groceries or clothing. Use your local combined rate for accurate totals.

How do I calculate the tax included in a price?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. If a receipt total is $54 and tax is 8%, the pre-tax amount is 54 ÷ 1.08 = $50, making the tax $4. This matters when reconciling expense reports.
