About Time Difference Calculator

A time difference calculator tells you how long something lasted in hours and minutes, whether that is a shift, a meeting, or a travel leg. Subtracting times that cross midnight or mixing 12-hour and 24-hour formats is where most people make errors, so a dedicated tool removes the guesswork.

The tool converts both times to a common minute count, subtracts, and converts the result back to hours and minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start, you flag it as next-day so the span crosses midnight instead of producing a negative duration. Results can also be expressed as total minutes, which is handy for payroll and billing.

Employees tracking shifts and overtime use it, parents and students schedule study or sleep windows with it, and anyone planning calls across time zones checks durations quickly. It is also useful for logging workouts, estimating screen-time limits, and verifying meeting lengths before booking.

How to Use

  1. Enter the start and end times.
  2. Tick 'next day' if the period crosses midnight.
  3. Read the elapsed time in hours and minutes.

Example

9:15 AM to 5:45 PM 8 hours 30 minutes

From 9:15 to 5:45 is 8.5 hours, shown as 8 hours and 30 minutes.

FAQ

What happens if the end time is earlier than the start?

Enable the next-day option to handle overnight shifts, or the tool will report a negative duration.

Can it compute total minutes?

Yes, the result shows both hours/minutes and the total in minutes.

Does it support 24-hour time?

Yes, enter times in either 12-hour (with AM/PM) or 24-hour format.

How do I subtract times that cross midnight?

Mark the span as next day so the end time is treated as belonging to the following day. From 11 PM to 2 AM is then 3 hours, rather than a nonsensical negative value.

How do I convert hours and minutes to a decimal?

Divide the minutes by 60. For 8 hours 30 minutes, that is 8 + 30/60 = 8.5 hours. This is the form most payroll and billing systems expect before calculating pay or charges.
